About The Abraham Lincoln Foundation
The mission of the Abraham Lincoln Foundation of the Union League is to preserve and develop the collections of the Union League and utilize them to educate and inspire the community.
The Abraham Lincoln Foundation (ALF) was founded in 1996. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in Pennsylvania, it is a public charity supported by gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and bequests. The Foundation makes the treasures of the Union League available to the public through tours, exhibits, symposia and special programs.
These treasures include: a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation; the original Tanner Manuscript; a priceless collection of more than 300 paintings, sculptures and prints; hundreds of artifacts, manuscripts, military weapons, flags and papers; and an important Civil War Library with more than 3,000 volumes of first and rare editions. A recent agreement with the Civil War Museum and Library of Philadelphia gives ALF stewardship responsibilities for the majority of that institution’s two-dimensional items. This doubles the size of the Civil War Library at the Union League and creates a unique cultural and historic asset that is national in scope and importance.
The Abraham Lincoln Foundation helps to shape an understanding of history – not only the history of the Union League itself but the history of the City of Philadelphia and the region – by collaborating with organizations such as the Civil War History Consortium, the Pennsylvania Quest for Freedom, the PA Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, La Salle University and Penn State University.
